WoW Forever Skinning Guide 1-300: Pristine Leather, Tanning & Camp Chair

What Forever changed about Skinning

Still the easiest gatherer to level while questing. Four Classic ranks to 300, plus new systems:

One skin per corpse. Blizzard's 1 October notes restored it: no sharing kills.
Tanning is a new crafting window; in beta it holds only three camp objects.
Pristine Leather, Pristine Hide and Pristine Scale are new Scarce materials in 141 recipes (126 use Pristine Leather).
Hides stack to 20 instead of 10.
Keen Skinning Knife and Engineering's Gnomish Army Knife (250) count as skinning knives; Pip's Skinner and Zulian Slicer aren't in the client.

Learning Skinning

New Junior Skinning trainers in starting zones. Alliance: Riley Peltskinner (Elwynn Forest, about 47,39), Brighid Stormflayer (Dun Morogh, about 29,67) and Terunne Bearshaper (Teldrassil, about 59,39). Horde: Margaret Weaver (Tirisfal Glades, about 32,66), Kagil (Durotar, about 41,68) and Nawka Wildsong (Mulgore, about 44,77). A level 3–4 starter quest also offers a gathering manual if you have under two professions.

Alliance quest Rough Wolf Pelts (Helene Peltskinner, near Goldshire): seven pelts from Elwynn wolves.

Skill ranks and what you can skin

Training: 10c, 5s, 50s, 5g (beta client). From 100 skill you can skin beasts up to skill ÷ 5 in level (150 → 30, 300 → 60); below 100 the Classic rule (skill ÷ 10 + 10) is assumed [Classic-based]. Carry a knife.

Skin everything you kill, then top up in bracket zones. Bands and beast levels [Classic-based].

Pristine Leather: the new money maker

Reported from about 22 creatures of level 11–21 (e.g. Westfall, the Barrens, Darkshore, Loch Modan); feeds Leatherworking, Tailoring and Blacksmithing, so early skinners are key suppliers. Pristine Hide and Pristine Scale sources are not confirmed. Bountiful Harvest boosts Scarce drops only.

Sit at a campfire about a minute for a one-hour buff (crit doesn't stack with Moonkin Aura). Shared one-hour cooldown.

Best partner: Leatherworking

Pair with Leatherworking; spare leather fills Waylaid Crates for Merchant's Favor (20 Light Leather = Apprentice Textiles). No Legacy points from Skinning.

Tips

Above 100, check beast level vs skill ÷ 5 before pulling.
Hides drop with their leather, more rarely.
Bountiful Harvest matters most to low-level skinners (Pristine Leather).
