WoW Forever layering explained
Short answer: ✅ Yes, WoW Forever uses layering. Every ruleset is one big regional world split into several copies running side by side. 👥 To stay with friends, stay grouped.
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| 🌍 World instance | Blizzard's name in its beta notes for one copy of the world |
| 🧅 Layer | The same thing, in the word Classic players use |
| 🔄 Refresh world | The in-game prompt shown before you move to another copy |
Why layering exists
Forever has no realms. Blizzard describes each ruleset (Normal, PvP, Roleplaying, Roleplay-PvP) as one large shared ecosystem (Choose Your Ruleset). Roleplay-PvP was added on 22 Oct (Aggrend's post). One world that size can't fit every player in one copy, so the game runs layers and moves you between them.
When you get moved
| Moment | Moved? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 👥 Forming or changing a group | Sometimes | Blizzard listed this as a known issue on 24 Sep; from 1 Oct the party leader should stay put |
| 🚢 Boats and zeppelins | Sometimes | Blizzard says it's fixing separation after transport loading screens |
| 🏰 Entering or leaving a capital | Sometimes | Blizzard named big groups layering at capitals as a fix target |
| ⚔️ In combat | ❌ You can't accept the refresh prompt (15 Oct build) | |
| ⏱️ Busy or empty area | Yes | A refresh prompt warns you first |

How to stay in the same layer as friends
- Group before you meet. Invite in a quiet spot, not beside a rare mob, because an invite can trigger a refresh.
- Let the friend in the busy area lead. The leader shouldn't move when the party changes, per the 1 Oct notes.
- Stay grouped through boats, zeppelins and cities. Leaving the group is when people most often vanish.
- Watch for the refresh prompt. ⏳ Beta-only (wording may change at launch): in the beta it said the world would refresh in 5 minutes, with Refresh Now and Okay buttons (Wowhead, non-Blizzard source). Get out of combat and to a safe spot first.

FAQ
Does WoW Forever have layering?
Yes. Each ruleset runs several copies of the open world at once. Blizzard's notes call them world instances; players call them layers.

How do I get on the same layer as a friend?
Group with them. Grouping moves you onto a shared layer. Blizzard's 1 Oct notes say the party leader should no longer be moved when a group forms, so let the friend already in the busy spot lead.
Can I pick my layer?
No. Blizzard hasn't announced a manual layer picker. ⏳ [Unconfirmed] for launch.
Why did everyone vanish?
The world refreshed you onto another layer. It can happen when a group forms or breaks up, at zone lines, on boats and zeppelins, or near capitals.
Can I refresh to escape a fight?
No. Since the 15 Oct beta build you can't accept the refresh-world prompt in combat.
Will layering go away after launch?
Blizzard says there will always be some layering, but it's working to make separations rarer. ⏳ [Unconfirmed] how much changes at launch.
