Wands carry the early game

Wowhead's beta tester calls wands very strong early on. Craft or buy one for your level, finish mobs with it so you don't spend mana, and consider two points in Wand Specialization (Arcane, row 1 in the 70532 client) while you're questing. Respecs cost 1 silver on the beta with a 1-hour cooldown, so you can drop those points later.

Frost at 20–30

From 20, the basic loop is Frostbolt until the target is frozen (by Frostbite or Frost Nova), then Ice Lance, a new Forever talent that deals 200% more damage to Frozen targets. Shatter and Fingers of Frost make that combo more reliable. Counterspell arrives at 24 and Cone of Cold also benefits from Shatter. Wowhead notes the old trick of using rank 1 Frostbolt to proc Frostbite no longer works.

Arcane and mana

Arcane Blast gets more expensive with every cast (up to 4 stacks). In dungeons, don't sit at high stacks on small pulls; save the mana for packs of 4–5. Use Evocation and racial mana tools often instead of hoarding them.

AoE

Wowhead's AoE order at 30: pre-cast Flamestrike if you can afford it, Blizzard on grouped mobs that won't die before it finishes, otherwise Arcane Explosion.

Class quest at 30

Mage trainers start a chain (Journey to the Marsh → Mage's Wand) that goes through Scarlet Monastery: Library. It ends with a choice of Icefury Wand, Ragefire Wand or Nether Force Wand, one per school.

Level 30 to 60

Beta caps at 30; no tested route or talent order beyond. Level 30–60 route: Not yet published, updated at launch.
